There’s a type of place that only appears in stories.

A cottage nestled in the trees. moss growing over rock walls. A rope bridge floating over a lit stream. Winding paths that lead off at right angles into other directions, disappearing around corners.

You’ve seen this before. We all have.

The Forest Cottage Book Nook Kit by Anavrin captures that feeling of another world right on your bookshelf, made of wood and lit from within.

What Forest Cottage Actually Is

Forest cottage is a detailed miniature book nook kit. It takes six to eight hours to assemble, and when you’re done, you have a small home for display between your books, or your shelves, glowing with the warm light of ten built in LEDs, waiting to be explored.

The Forest Cottage is a mix between a craft and a decorative display. The kit contains 245 pre-painted wooden pieces, ten LEDS, an English instruction guide, and a USB-C power cable. Three AA batteries are required to power the USB-C if you don’t want to use it. No glue is included, though it is noted in the materials.

Assembled, the diorama kit stands 9.1 inches tall, 4.9 inches wide, with a depth of 8.1 inches. It is a moderately complex beginner level build, marked as such with a three out of five star rating.

The World Inside the Kit

What makes this diorama different from any other is the wonder it inspires.

Unlike most generic miniature kits, this one has a story not written anywhere, but one that unfolds as you build.

A glowing lake hidden beneath the trees. Behind the cottage, beneath the moss and stone path, is a lake of light that only fully appears as you put the final pieces in place and watch the LEDs flicker on.

A rope bridge that disappears around the tree. Suspended over the trail is a tiny woven bridge, making the diorama feel expansive despite the small scale.

Moss covered stone paths. Weathered stone walls and steps are wrapped in vines and creeping mosses, giving the cottage a lived in, abandoned by time feel.

Light falling through the circular ceiling. The ceiling shape filters the light in a way that mimics the effect of sunlight falling through leaves, casting patterns across the floor. It adds another layer of realism to an already realistic woodsman cottage.

A hidden forest creature. Peek around the trees and you may spot the forest animal hiding among the foliage. It’s the type of detail that makes you search the diorama again and again to find it, and after you’ve built it, you still search and search for it again and again.

Every single detail of this diorama was carefully planned. There is no generic filler found here, no unneeded clutter. Every piece was added to make this diorama feel more like home.

What the Build Feels Like

Six to eight hours sounds like a long time to spend building something. But in the case of Forest Cottage, it won't feel that way.

It is designed to be a relaxing slow build, where you can set it down and pick it up again later. You don’t have to race to finish this one, as it asks little of you other than to pay attention to the numbered pieces and follow the images to match them to the assembly.

It also helps to have someone else to build it with. Many assemble this diorama with a friend or a partner, or even a child. It is a bonding experience that doesn’t require much in the way of skills, other than patience and the ability to put small pieces together.

Who Forest Cottage Is Really For

There are some people for whom Forest Cottage is the ideal kit for them. While everyone can enjoy it no matter what, there are some groups of people who will find it speaks more directly to their hearts.

If you like cottage core, you’ll enjoy this kit immensely. It embodies the rustic feel, the moss covered cottages, the glow of light among the trees, it all combines to make a place that is exactly the kind of setting that cottage core enthusiasts dream of.

If you are a nature lover (and a bookworm too), this diorama belongs on your bookshelf between your books. It captures perfectly the feeling of being between the two worlds of the great outdoors and the comforts of a home among books. It feels right there, as if it belongs.

If you want to buy it as a gift, this is one of the best kinds of gifts to buy for someone, something everyone should own at least once. The build is an experience and it leaves behind a keepsake for display afterward

If you’ve been feeling cooped up and you need something to ground you in the simple act of putting things together to make something beautiful and you want this Forest Cottage Book Nook to be your salvation.

After the Last Piece

One of the most surprising things about building these types of book nook is that after you build it and you put it on display, you find yourself drawn back again and again to look at the details for the first time. The things you didn’t notice when you first built it become apparent.

You pause and marvel at the lit up lake or the rope bridge that leads off somewhere you can only imagine as you watch the LEDs twinkle on and off. You search and search and then find it again, the miniature forest creature hiding among the trees. Every time you look at it, you find yourself smiling.

This is what the best of the book nook kits accomplish. They spark the feeling of discovery and they leave you searching, again and again. It is the feeling of homecoming every time you return to look at the cottage and find it just as you left it

The Forest Cottage belongs on your bookshelf. It belongs in the homes of people who know how to appreciate the small joys in life. It belongs anywhere that people who miss the comfort of a cottage in the woods can find themselves needing it most. It belongs everywhere those who seek it can find it.
