Can you spot the salaryman?
Somewhere in the narrow alley, after the bars have filled and the night has gone quiet, someone is still there.
Golden Gai has barely changed since its doors first opened in the backstreets of Shinjuku. Step inside and the neon fades to amber. Strangers sit shoulder to shoulder, sharing sake and conversations that carry past midnight.
Now it's your turn to build it.
The Golden Gai Book Nook Kit is a 265-piece beginner build, layered with stacked signboards, tangled wires, and 13 LED lights casting the warm glow of a bar at the end of a long week.
Give yourself 6 to 8 hours. And see if you can find him.
A sequel to our Kyoto Gion and Omoide Yokocho.

Description
Golden Gai was never designed. It was accumulated, bar by bar, sign by sign, decade by decade, until a single alleyway in Shinjuku became one of the most atmospheric places in Tokyo.
Inside these tiny rooms, time moves differently. Bar owners greet regulars by name. Strangers share tables they've never shared before. Outside, the city keeps its relentless pace. Inside, for a few hours, nothing is in a hurry.
We spent a night wandering through Golden Gai ourselves: smoke filled, amber lit, and louder in conversation than the music. It's the kind of place you don't fully understand until you're sitting inside one of the bars yourself.
Past one doorway, a single cook works behind a narrow counter, steam rising from a pot that never seems to go cold. The regulars don't order. They just sit, and a bowl appears, like it always does.
Every detail in this kit was built to hold onto that feeling: the stacked signboards, the tangled wires overhead, the narrow staircases lit only by lantern glow.
This is Golden Gai. A celebration of human connection, where conversations linger and the city quietly exhales.

Golden Gai Book Nook Kit

WHY YOU WILL BUILD THIS
Where the Salarymen Unwind, the City Disappears
This alleyway was never planned. It accumulated.
Bar stacked against bar. Signboard layered over signboard. Wires running between buildings with no logic except that they had always been there. Golden Gai grew the way only real places grow — slowly, imperfectly, and with complete disregard for design rules.
Every detail in this kit was built to reflect that truth. Warm amber light pools across hand-placed signboards and miniature izakaya counters. Tangled wires run overhead just as they do on the real street. Lanterns glow softly in the narrow passageways below.
And somewhere in the shadow of the lantern light, barely visible unless you look closely, a salaryman sits at the bar. Jacket still on. Glass already in hand. The night still long ahead of him.
This is what it means to build with ANAVRIN®.

What Makes It Special
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know before you bring Golden Gai to life.
What skill level do I need to build this?
Golden Gai is rated beginner. You do not need prior crafting experience, but this build rewards patience — particularly when layering the signboards and placing the finer architectural details. If you have built a book nook before, you will feel comfortable here. If this is your first, take it slowly and enjoy every step.
How long does the build take?
Give yourself 6 to 8 hours total. Most builders spread this across two sessions. There is no rush point in this build, and the slower you go, the better it looks.
Is this suitable as a gift?
It ships in packaging that reflects the quality inside. Golden Gai is a considered gift for anyone who loves Japan, atmospheric décor, or the kind of craft that lingers with you. If gifting to a first-time builder, we recommend pairing it with a note about the story — half the experience is knowing what you are building.
What is included in the kit?
Everything you need to complete the build: 265 pre-cut wooden pieces, 13 LED light components, miniature izakaya figurines and salaryman silhouettes, layered signboard components, overhead wire detailing, a USB power cable, an acrylic dust cover, and a fully illustrated English instruction manual.
(Glue and batteries are not included due to shipping restrictions.)
What tools will I need?
A small pair of tweezers (Included) and a toothpick for placing small details. White/silicon-based craft glue works best for assembly.
What are the finished dimensions?
The completed Cats Crossing Book Nook measures approximately 18 cm wide by 22 cm tall by 14 cm deep. It fits between standard bookshelf volumes and is designed to sit flush against your books.
Does it need batteries or a power outlet?
The LED lighting runs via USB. A USB-A cable is included. You can power it from any standard USB adapter, laptop port, or USB hub. No batteries required.
What if a piece is missing or damaged?
Reach out to us directly at info@byanavrin.com. We keep replacement parts on hand and will get the right piece to you as quickly as possible for free. A missing piece is not the end of your build.
Are these suitable for children?
We recommend the kit for ages 10 and above. Many parents have shared that their 6 to 8-year-olds enjoy building together with some guidance. It’s a lovely family activity that encourages creativity, patience, and quality time together.
